Divided Dice Bag crochet pattern

The completed Dice Bag loaded with PB cups, because I don’t have dice

Recently, a friend of mine commissioned me to make 5 items for her Bridal Party (You can watch me make them on my vlog here). One of those items was a multi-compartment dice bag. The image she sent me was of a 7 compartment version with a center compartment (it was specifically designed for D&D, get that pattern HERE), made of single stranded worsted weight yarn. It looked like a more in depth project than I had time for, so I decided to make my own version with some adjustments to make it a faster project.

Behold, the divided dice bag is BORN! I went with double stranded worsted weight & half double crochet for a faster make time, and reduced the compartments to 6 for ease of construction. The end result was so cool that I didn’t want to have to say goodbye to it. After posting it on my Instagram and TikTok, multiple people asked for a pattern. That was just the nudging I needed to make more dice bags, and I got to work. The initial version I made used more pieces in the construction, but after sewing the first bag together, I thought of an easier way. So, I made some changes to the design and now I bring to you the Divided dice bag V2.

This bag can be used for loads of things other than dice, like makeup, sewing tools, trinkets, etc. It can also easily be customized to your needs. Want it wider? Keep increasing at R11 until your bag is as big as you’d like, then proceed with the rest of the pattern. Be sure to make your dividers wider, too! You can make the compartments deeper by adding more CH to the dividers. If you make deeper compartments, be sure to add rounds to your bag to compensate. It’s so easy to make the divided dice bag of your dreams!

I hope you enjoy this free pattern. If you prefer video instruction, or if you get confused and need a visual reference, I have a full video tutorial here as well. The crocheting aspect of this project is very easy; the challenge is in the construction. Just take your time when sewing, and many deep breaths, and you will make it through to the other side with an awesome 6 compartment bag to tote around whatever your heart desires!

Dividers

Above: The center divider should touch the sides of the bag without bending/bowing

Using a ruler or measuring tape, check the internal diameter of your dice bag. Mine was 8 inches wide. Your center divider needs to fit inside your dice bag, with the edges touching the sides of the bag without bending/bowing in the center. For me, this was 18 total rows. The side dividers will need to be slightly shorter than the center divider, since they will be folded in half to fit inside the bag on either side of the center divider. Tension varies person to person; Please measure as you go to ensure proper fit of the dividers. You can adjust your divider’s fit by adding or removing a row. Finished dividers will be approx 3 inches deep. You can make the dividers any depth you like by chaining to your desired length on R1.

Center divider

R1: In alternate color held double stranded, CH 9, starting in the 2nd CH from the hook, HDC x 8 [8]

Drawstring

You can use a variety of things as your drawstring, including i cord, ribbons, reusing drawstrings from old clothing, shoestring, etc. For the purposes of this pattern, we are using a chain. Feel free to get creative and use whatever works and makes your heart happy.

Above: Place a knot into the ends of the CH

Form a slipknot & CH until your drawstring is at least 1.5 times the diameter of your dice bag (36-48 inches). Hold the tail of your CH against the CH and tie a knot close to the end of your CH. This will give your drawstring a nice, finished end.

Assembly

Above: Attach the middle points together

Fold the dividers in half and mark the middle point with a stitch marker on either side. The middle of the center divider should be the space between R9 & R10. The middle of the side dividers should be R9. Sandwich the middle of all 3 dividers together. Weave the remaining tail down to the middle point of the divider. Sew the 3 dividers together along the middle points (see photo). Dividers should form an asterisk (*) shape when attached.

Above: Pin the dividers in place in the shape of an asterisk. Dividers should be approx 12 stitches apart

Place the divider inside of the dice bag and pin in place. Use as many pins as you need to to hold the dividers in the best position for sewing. Be sure to line the dividers up as evenly as possible before pinning (The space between each divider should be approx 12 stitches). Sew the divider panels to the dice bag using main color yarn & weave in the ends.

Above: Weave your drawstring through the final round of DC

Adding the drawstring

Weave the CH in & out of the final DC round of the dice bag (I wove through 2 DC at a time). Pull on both ends of the drawstring at the same time to close

Your Dice Bag is COMPLETE!
