As far back as I can remember, I have wanted to be a fictional character. The real world is cruel and scary, but the make believe world is full of the good guys winning and happy endings. Fictional characters seemed to have opportunities that I didn’t and they get to live in fantastical places we can only dream of. So you can understand why cosplay appeals to me. It’s always fun to dress up as your favorite characters and feel like maybe, just for a moment, you are a part of their world.

Over the Garden Wall has got to be in my top 3 shows ever. The instant I saw it I knew I loved every single bit of it. Greg is my favorite character and I couldn’t pass up the chance to turn myself into him. I have crocheted Jason Funderburker and a Rock Facts rock already, so I only needed a few components to complete the look. Si last year I got to work & crocheted a little brown crossbody bag and a teapot hat, and found the rest of the items I needed at the thrift store (I would like to crochet the overalls for the outfit in the future). Quite a few people asked me for a pattern/tutorial for the teapot hat, so here we are!

People come in all shapes and sizes, so your head may be bigger or smaller than mine. I will give you instructions to help you size your teapot up or down as needed to get a good fit. It is not a beanie/traditional hat; it is designed to fit over the crown of your head just enough to hold it in place. You can leave the teapot unstuffed (It may become misshapen during wear due to the lack of structure) or add some stuffing to help give your hat some stability.

Abbreviations

• MC - Magic circle

• CH - Chain

• ST - Stitch

• SLST - Slip stitch

• SC - Single crochet

• BLO - Back loops only

• FLO - Front loops only

• INC - Increase, or to place 2 stitches into the same stitch

• DEC - Decrease, worked as an invisible DEC (place hook thru front loops of the next 2 stitches, YO & pull thru 2 loops, YO & pull thru all remaining loops)

• FO - Finish off, close your work by cutting your yarn, YO & pull the tail thru to secure your work

Teapot

Measure your head circumference using a measuring tape (Mine is 21.5 inches). You will need to increase your teapot base until it is 1 inch wider in circumference than your head. You may need to add or subtract rounds to attain the correct size.

R1: MC, SC x 8

R2: INC x 8 [16]

R5: (SC BLO x 3, INC BLO) x 8 [40] mark the 1st & last front loops for future reference

At this point, your teapot base should be 1 inch larger in diameter than your head measurement. If it is not, add increase rounds here until it is as large as needed, then proceed. You will need to adjust your stitch counts going forward if your size is different than mine.

R11: SC x 12, SC 4 to attach handle, SC x 48 [64]

Line the spout up on the opposite side from the handle & attach to the widest part of the teapot, R10-12.

Weave in remaining ends.
